Cylinder Cover Overhaul and Inspection
Cylinder cover overhaul involves cleaning, crack inspection, sealing-surface checks, cooling-passage inspection, valve and injector seat assessment, stud and thread checks, and reassembly with correct components. The cover must seal combustion pressure and cooling spaces reliably.
Common inspection areas
- Fire face cracks, erosion, corrosion, and thermal damage
- Fuel valve, starting valve, indicator cock, relief valve, and exhaust valve seating areas
- Cooling water passages, scale, corrosion, and leakage evidence
- Landing surfaces, studs, threads, and gasket contact areas
Symptom, possible cause and inspection
| Symptom | Possible cause | Inspection |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling water loss | Crack, gasket leakage, or cooling passage defect | Pressure test and inspect sealing areas |
| Combustion leakage | Poor seating or damaged landing surface | Inspect cover face and sealing marks |
| Repeated valve leakage | Seat condition, distortion, or incorrect assembly | Inspect valve seat and mating surfaces |
Measurements and acceptance limits
Condition assessment should be based on recorded measurements, visual findings, operating symptoms, and the applicable maker documentation. Acceptable limits should be confirmed against the applicable manufacturer's manual and engine-specific technical documentation.

Technical note
This article is for general technical information. Actual procedures, limits, clearances, pressures, temperatures, torque values, and renewal criteria depend on the engine model, configuration, maker revision, service bulletin, vessel procedures, and class requirements. Manufacturer manuals and vessel safety procedures take precedence. Safety-critical work should be carried out by appropriately qualified personnel.
