Main Engine Starting Failure: Troubleshooting Guide
Main engine starting failure may be caused by insufficient starting air pressure, blocked or leaking starting air lines, faulty starting valves, control-air problems, safety interlocks, turning gear engagement, fuel admission problems, or control-system faults. Troubleshooting should confirm whether the engine fails to turn or turns but does not fire.
Symptom, possible cause and inspection

Immediate checks before repeated starts
- Confirm turning gear status and safety interlocks
- Check starting air pressure and drain condition

- Avoid repeated starting attempts if abnormal noise, resistance, or suspected hydraulic lock is present
Measurements and acceptance limits
Condition assessment should be based on recorded measurements, visual findings, operating symptoms, and the applicable maker documentation. Acceptable limits should be confirmed against the applicable manufacturer's manual and engine-specific technical documentation.
